Tanpopo Tea House

Everybody knows the big players in the Perth Japanese food scene – the swanky, tasty purse-snatchers like Matsuri and Tsunami, the ever-proliferating kaiten-zushi madness of Jaws, and the cheap, hearty city haunts such as Taka’s and Mr Samurai. What you may not be aware of is the well-priced wide range of Japanese favourites at Tanpopo Tea House, nestled in an arcade in Mt Lawley, opposite Planet Video and the Flying Scotsman. You can be sure that people who do know the place keep going back, both for the value and the taste.

Way In

With almost thirty widely varied dishes, you could eat at Tanpopo every day for a month and still be satisfied. Those with an eye for value might stick with the Vegetable Tempura Donburi, at only $6.15 with mountains of vegetables, rice, and salad, or the healthy Agedashi Tofu Set for $5.40 with flavoured takikomi rice and salad. The most popular item on the menu is the Double Meat Teriyaki Chicken Special, a bargain in a rice/salad set for $6.95 ($5.50 for the regular serving).

Saturday also sees specials on miso soup and korokke sets for those who want the authentic taste of Japan for a reasonable price.

Tanpopo is open Mon-Fri 9:30-7:00 and Sat 9:30-6:00. You can dine in (the decor’s not their strong point, but take in some wine and don’t worry about it) or take away – they take pickup orders too. The perfect place for a good, cheap lunch or an easy dinner in the Mt Lawley area.

  1. Korokke(japansese croquette) sets became weekday menu!
You can choose “Poteto Vege korokke” or “Pumpkin korokke”.
The sets has 2 korokke, rice with teriyaki sauce and some salad. You can get them for $4.50.
    Try them!

  3. Chicken Teriyaki Double Meat is now $7 something – still a great bargain!

Best cheap Japanese in Perth in my opinion! I love Tan Popo!

Do wish they’d clear the tables more regularly though.

  5. Typical Japanese restaurant owned by non-Japanese in Perth. Why don’t they just sell Korean food if they cannot cook Japanese properly?

  6. Nao – sorry to burst your bubble, but I can confirm that Tanpopo is definitely owned and run by Japanese. Perhaps you should check your facts before posting?

  7. Tan Po Po is the best Japanese restaurant in Perth, people who say otherwise haven’t eaten at any other Japanese restaurant.

Frequently people make the complaints that Tan Po Po is either:

    1. Too slow
    2. The tables are too dirty/full of plates
    3. The meat portions are too small

The first reason is unacceptable, this is because Tan Po Po is not a fast-food restauant. They have authenticly home-made food, which is prepared at the time of order (excluding some things, such as miso, which has to be pre-made).

The tables being filled with dishes is something that has happened since they were in the arcade. They used to have a separate table that you were supposed to place the dirty dishes on. So now all you have to do is give the plates to a waitress or the person at the counter. There is no reason to complain about something like that, after the fact, just because you are too lazy to do anything about the situation. Even better, move the plates to the table with the most plates, why eat with someone else’s mess infront of you and getting angry when it’s so simple to remedy it.

Lastly, Japanese cuisine is vastly different from the American-style food Perthians are used to. Having a good knowledge of that will prevent those fat meat-eaters from not knowing what “wagyu” (Japanese cow, usually massaged because they don’t have much room to move. With less space to farm it means less cows can be bred, which in turn makes each cow worth more and add on the masseuse’s wage, it means the portions are smaller) means. There is another reason though; Japanese find it very impolite to not eat their entire serving, so making it smaller prevents such a thing from occurring.
